The Future of Mobility: Scenarios for the United States in 2030
This policy research report employs advanced scenario planning methodology to project the long-term future of passenger travel within the United States looking toward the year 2030. Collaborating with the Institute for Mobility Research (ifmo), the authors synthesize expert projections across five core influencing domains: energy markets, technological innovation, transportation financing, macroeconomics, and demographics. By processing these complex variables, the study constructs multiple distinct future narratives differentiated by three critical drivers—fluctuating oil prices, the trajectory of greenhouse gas environmental regulations, and the stability of highway revenues. These structured pathways, ranging from high-cost restrictive travel frameworks to high-mobility automated models, serve as essential markers. Ultimately, this volume provides a vital strategic blueprint designed to help regional planners, government policymakers, and private sector leaders anticipate structural disruptions, manage uncertainty, and make informed infrastructure decisions today.
