Encountering: Pain Hearing, seeing, speaking
Encountering Pain: Hearing, Seeing, Speaking, edited by Deborah Padfield and Joanna M. Zakrzewska, explores the complex experience of persistent pain and the challenges involved in communicating pain between patients and healthcare professionals. The book brings together perspectives from medicine, science, the arts, humanities, and the personal experiences of people living with pain to develop a broader understanding of pain and its meanings. Particular attention is given to the use of visual images, photography, gesture, testimony, and other forms of non-verbal communication as tools for expressing experiences that may be difficult to articulate through language alone. Through interdisciplinary research and patient-centered perspectives, the book examines ways of improving clinician–patient communication and understanding the physical, emotional, social, and cultural dimensions of pain. Overall, it provides insights into persistent pain and proposes creative and communicative approaches that may contribute to more empathetic healthcare practices and future research.
